Review Process

The IRA/CAEP review process is similar to the peer-review process for publication.

IRA program reviewers use the Guidelines for Program Writers and Reviewers for direction in conducting the review.

Below is an overview of the process held twice a year, fall and spring:

Fall Review Cycle

  • September 15—This is the final date for Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) to submit reports on the AIMS system.
  • September 15-October 15—CAEP staff sends reviewers a Conflict of Interest survey and assigns reviewers and lead reviewers with assistance of the IRA SPA Coordinator.
  • October 15-November 15—Teams of reviewers evaluate reports independently and then come to consensus on the Team Report, which is posted by the Lead Reviewer.
  • Late October-early November—IRA Writer and Reviewer Training Workshops are held at the Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers (ALER) annual meeting.
  • November 15-January 4—Audit team and IRA SPA Coordinator check reports for accuracy, validity and reliability across all IRA and CAEP guidelines.
  • January 4-January 31—CAEP staff conduct program report edits.
  • February 1—IHEs receive National Recognition decision reports on the AIMS online system.

Spring Review Cycle

  • March 15—This is the final date for Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) to submit reports on the AIMS system.
  • March 15-April 15—CAEP staff sends reviewers a Conflict of Interest survey and assigns reviewers and lead reviewers with assistance of the IRA SPA Coordinator.

  • July 1-July 31—CAEP staff conduct program report edits.
  • August 1—IHEs receive National Recognition decision reports on the AIMS online system.
