Insights From Teachers Who Analyzed Transcripts of Their Own Classroom Discussions

Transcript analysis is a way for teachers to engage in inquiry on their own practice. The insights of three teachers who engaged in transcript analysis of their own classroom discussions are described in this article.

The teachers analyzed and reflected on their transcripts using a coding manual and a comparison and reflection guide. The coding manual provided labels for coding the kinds of questions and teacher responses that occurred during the teachers' text-based discussions. The comparison and reflection guide guided the teachers in organizing their data and invited them to reflect on text selection, decisions about where to stop in the text to pose a question, kinds of questions that supported student effort in developing an understanding of text ideas, and kinds of responses to students that extended students' thinking.
