full text - HTML   full text - PDF

Research has indicated the critical role families play in supporting literacy development in young children. Developing effective home–school partnerships is an important step in helping parents provide that support.

This column describes a program designed for families of preschool children, but with an eye on later literacy achievement. The program, Building Language Together, focuses on the development of cognitive, linguistic abilities that provide the framework for academic success. It addresses areas of vocabulary development, narrative understanding, phonological awareness, and expository text.
