full text - HTML   full text - PDF

The authors present an instructional scaffold for supporting English-language learners' (ELLs) development of academic language proficiency and content knowledge. They describe the construction and use of sentence walls, a visual scaffold of language to give ELLs an entry point to participation and discussions in content literacy classrooms. They acknowledge that the development of content literacy and English-language proficiency are key elements in the academic success of ELLs and propose that sentence walls can help teachers and students achieve that success.
