Teaching Tips
Building Word Consciousness

A love of words is usually not cultivated by defining terms on a worksheet. The activities described in this article are designed to stimulate curiosity for learning new vocabulary. Excellent trade books serve as the backbone for these lessons. Students are encouraged to look within and beyond the walls of the classroom for fresh ways to express what they see and hear. They become engaged in pursuits that stimulate movement and the senses. By creating a place where the study of words is treasured and enjoyed, teachers will reap the benefits throughout the year.
