Improving the Asphalt of Reading Instruction: A Tribute to the Work of Steven A. Stahl

This department is a review of Steven Stahl's research contributions and contains his beliefs about reading instruction. It begins with biographical highlights that shaped Stahl's reading perspective. Next, there is a discussion of Stahl's contributions to five domains that are central to reading: phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. The column closes with the author's personal thoughts about Stahl as a man and a researcher.
