Abstract of Building Knowledge and Fashioning Success One School at a TimeMarjorie Y. LipsonJames H. MosenthalJane MekkelsenBarbara Russ“Successful schools do not happen by accident, and they are not guaranteed by the presence of nice families and orderly classrooms.” This was one conclusion that emerged from a longitudinal study of successful and less successful schools. Over the course of three years, the authors sought to determine what might be behind variations in school success in one U.S. state. Their work lead them to conclude that no one program, set of teachers, socioeconomic context, or group of learners guarantees a successful school, but that the committed actions and intelligent decision making of teachers and administrators are critical.
