Abstract of

A Test for Assessing Phonemic Awareness in Young Children

full text - HTML   full text - PDF

Phonemic awareness, or the ability to recognize series of sounds in spoken language, is important for acquisition of early literacy skills, particularly in decoding text and spelling. The Yopp–Singer Test of Phoneme Segmentation provides teachers with a tool for assessing young children's phonemic awareness and identifying those who may experience later difficulty in reading and spelling. Here the author describes the test, its use, and research that supports its validity, and provides a reproducible master of the test itself.
