Abstract of Book Club: An Alternative Framework for Reading InstructionTaffy E. RaphaelSusan I. McMahonThis article explores book clubs, one model for literature-based reading instruction. Working from the perspective that literacy learning is enhanced when students interact with one another orally and in writing to construct meaning from text, the authors describe a program that involves reading, writing, whole-class discussion, and instruction. Classroom experiences of 9- and 10-year-olds engaged in reading, writing, and discussion of high-quality children's literature are described. Abstract from Raphael, T.E., & McMahon, S.I.
