Taking Place: The Teacher in Reading

A parent of a prospective student asked about the reading program at the author's school, expressing concern regarding her son's ability to read words and comprehend meaning. The author acknowledged disappointment over the features of the reading program and highlighted essential components in her curriculum. She specifically addressed word-attack strategies as well as developing determination and self-efficacy, thus evoking the parent's gratitude and affirming the role and expertise of the teacher.
