Abstract of

Literacy Issues in Focus
Let's Not Marginalize Adolescent Literacy

full text - HTML   full text - PDF

“The literacy development of a 12-year-old in a middle school or a 17-year-old in high school remains as critical a concern to society as the literacy development of a preschool child or a child in the elementary grades.” This powerful essay claims that recent emphases on early literacy learning have come at the expense of adolescents, on whom demands for high levels of literacy are increasing. Without sustained attention to literacy learning and development throughout the school years, education will not achieve the goal of preparing learners well for their future lives and roles.
