Reading, writing, and language instruction are well served when they are viewed as a means to rich subject-matter learning. The Seeds of Science
Roots of Reading project begins with the goals of inquiry-based science education, and embeds the goals of reading, writing, and language education.
In this 70-minute presentation, Pearson and Cervetti describe how science and literacy goals are implemented in a read it, write it, talk it, do it cycle, in which science and literacy activities are emphasized as synergistic, if not identical, processes.
The presenters report on the midterm results of a study to assess the efficacy of this curriculum (in comparison to a science-only curriculum and an untreated control) on measures of acquisition of science content, content-embedded literacy skills, and content-free literacy skills.
P. David Pearson is dean and professor at the Graduate School of Education, University of California, Berkeley, USA. Gina Cervetti is a postdoctoral scholar at the same institution. (more about the presenters)
