As the Latino population in the United States grows, opportunities and challenges for the educational system grow with it: opportunities in language abilities and cultural traditions that enrich our social fabric; challenges in the low education, high poverty, and low English proficiency of large segments of this population.
Our job as educators must be to take advantagein the best sense of the phrase and for the benefit of the entire societyof the opportunities while figuring out how to address the challenges. We need more and better research, certainly, and we need more and better practices informed by that research. But we also need an ideology that combines a dispassionate search for truth with an equally passionate and relentless commitment to removing barriers to the economic, political, educational, and social mainstreams. As a profession, can we forge such an ideology?
