video icon Improving Literacy Environments and Experiences for Children Birth to Five: Research and Resources

A Multimedia Presentation From Reading Research 2005

About this presentation

Many children spend time in their early years in childcare centers or preschools. These are therefore critical settings for fostering literacy development.

The presenters examined the degree to which childcare settings in Michigan, USA, employed practices for promoting emergent literacy—particularly those supported by research and expert opinion. Their study suggests some areas of strength, but notes that many providers do miss opportunities for promoting literacy growth.

There is a growing body of professional resources available for improving literacy environments and experiences in childcare and preschool settings, and the presenters highlight several. They also discuss the need for K–12 school and district staff to provide leadership and support for promoting emergent literacy to childcare and preschool providers in their community.

Nell Duke is an associate professor and associate director of the Literacy Achievement Research Center at Michigan State University, East Lansing, USA. Annie Moses is a doctoral student at the same university. (more about the presenters)
