This 54-minute presentation describes how high-quality teaching in reading can be characterized and identified.
Drawing on their experience in the ongoing High Quality Teaching in Mathematics and Reading project, presenters Linda Valli and Marilyn Chambliss outline research questions, site selection, instruments, and data collection. Their study is based in fourth- and fifth-grade classrooms in schools where student scores on high-stakes tests are higher than would be predicted, given the socioeconomic status of the schools. The study explores how successful teachers positively affect student learning in reading and mathematics and respond to pedagogical, organizational, administrative, and policy challenges.
Linda Valli and Marilyn Chambliss are professors at the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, USA.
