Reading Today

Reading Today is the membership magazine of the International Reading Association (IRA). Reading Today was published as a bi-monthly newspaper from 1983 through 2011. Beginning with the August/September 2011 issue, Reading Today transitioned to a magazine with two components: the Reading Today bi-monthly print magazine (with an interactive digital version) and the Reading Today Online website.

Reading Today in Print

The Reading Today print magazine is a 48-page, four-color, glossy publication which is mailed to members every two months. It follows the same schedule as the newspaper did, with issues in July/August, September/October, November/December, January/February, March/April, and May/June. All members, including online only members, can login to view an interactive digital version of the latest print issue on the Members-Only section the IRA website. Articles from this interactive digital version can be printed or saved as PDFs. This version also has active hyperlinks and a search function.

Reading Today Online

Reading Today Online is updated daily with articles on the following topics: Member & Events News, Literacy Research, Legislation & Policy, The Engaging Classroom, and Children’s & YA Literature. The Literacy Research section is coordinated by IRA’s Literacy Research Panel. The Engaging Classroom includes Teaching Tips, Putting Books to Work features, Digital Literacies articles written by members of IRA’s Technology in Literacy Education Special Interest Group (TILE-SIG), Plugged In with Julie D. Ramsay, Quiet! Teacher in Progress with Mrs. Mimi, and other articles useful for classroom lesson planning. Book reviews, reading lists, and author interviews are found in the Children’s & YA Literature section. You can access articles one at a time by clicking on their links, or you can view all of the articles in a certain section by clicking on that section name.

The International Reading Association’s Reading Today staff is always looking for interesting articles that tell the story through the people involved. We encourage you to include quotes, photos, your photo, your bio, and more.

Word Count One magazine page is 500 words. Two pages are 1,000 words. Three pages are 1,500 words. One page includes seven short book reviews. Online articles should be around 300 words, longer for some sections such as Teaching Tips and sets of book reviews.
Style Use the IRA Style Guide. Consider inserting short section headers every three or four paragraphs. Include captions for photos. You can include references but keep them to a minimum. (This is a magazine, not a journal.) Include a short bio: “Name is position at organization,”
Images Save photos in JPG, TIFF, or PNG format. Save images like charts, maps, and line art as GIF, TIFF, or PNG format. Please no BMP (bitmap). For the print magazine, image resolution should be at least 200 dpi, and 4” x 6” in size. For online, image resolution can be 72 dpi. Do not place photos in the Word document with your text. Programs like Microsoft Word reduce the quality of photos and make them unsuitable for professional printing. Do not submit photos taken by cell phones. For the magazine, do not submit photos that you “Googled” and downloaded from the Internet. They often do not have a high enough resolution.
Book Reviews We write reviews of new, pre-K through 12, fiction and nonfiction books for Reading Today Online. While we do not review textbooks or books for higher education students, we will accept article submissions from their authors. For information about how to submit a book for consideration, e-mail
Member News IRA members can submit career news (books published, awards received, promotions/retirements, etc.) for consideration in Reading Today's News & Notes section. Contact information and links to background information, if applicable, should be included for verification. Photographs must be 300 dpi for reproduction and may be PNG, JPEG, or GIF files. Submissions, which must be 200 words or less, may be edited for clarity or length, and IRA reserves the right to all final editorial decisions. Due to space, anything not included in Reading Today may be published on Reading Today Online. Submissions should be sent either in Word or copied into the e-mail, with separate photo attachments, to with the subject line "News & Notes."
