Students need to learn in an active manner by interacting with their teachers, content, and peers. Fisher and Frey identify the gradual release of responsibility (GRR) instructional framework as essential for student achievement, as it transfers the responsibility of learning from teacher to student in a mindful and systematic way. They discuss the four components of the GRR framework (focused instruction, guided instruction, collaborative learning, independent learning) and show how each looks in a content area classroom.
