Visualizing the Argument With Graphic Organizers

The Common Core State Standards’ trajectory of writing skill development notes that early-grade students should be able to identify and characterize evidence supporting their opinions. By sixth grade, these students should be able to make an argument containing organized claims, supporting data, and reasons or warrants documenting relationships between claims and data. This article explores this trajectory of writing skill development and the use of graphic organizers as one supporting tool that enables students to visualize the organizational development of written pieces.
