What Happens After the Reading?

It’s important for students to know that learning doesn’t end when one is finished reading a piece of text. Instead, to deepen students’ comprehension far beyond what they’d accomplish on their own, Fisher and Frey propose devoting more time to after-reading practices that include critical discussion, productive group work, and writing for purposes of research and presentation.

This column guides you toward providing your students with tasks that vary in complexity. It offers tips for spurring critical discussions with text-dependent questions and guiding students through activities such as précis writing and debates.
