by Annie Enchakattu | Oct 29, 2010

Scholastic Media has announced the winners of its second annual "Be Big in Your Community Contest," a signature component of the ongoing Clifford The Big Red Dog Be Big campaign sponsored by American Family Insurance. Sixteen-year-old Tucson student Jennifer O'Neal's big idea to create a hospital classroom for young cancer patients at the Diamond Children's Medical Center has been awarded the $25,000 grand prize grant from the Be Big fund.

Ten additional first place winners will each receive a $2,500 community grant, and 19 second place winners will receive grants totaling $25,000. Several projects relate to education and/or reading, such as a "Shelter Libraries" book donation initiative in Atlanta, a refuge education initiative in Houston, and a "Connect Through Comics" mentor program in Washington, DC.
