Opinion: Rewarding good teachers is gaining bipartisan support

In an article from The Wall Street Journal online, Eric A. Hanushek discusses how teachers play an important role in school effectiveness. All sides of the educational policy debate now accept that the key determinant of school effectiveness is teachers—that effective teachers get good achievement results for all children, while ineffective teachers hurt all students, regardless of background, says Hanushek.

Hanushek writes that any reforms teachers unions don’t like, they label a “war on teachers.” Noting that President Obama has state that bad teachers can no longer be tolerated in classrooms, Hanushek writes that this is not a “war on teachers en masse,” but a necessary change in order to have more exceptional teachers in schools.
