New York, eight other states and the District of Columbia were named winners today in the second round of a national competition for $3.4 billion in federal funds for school improvement and education innovation.
The other winning states in the Race to the Top grant competition were Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Ohio and Rhode Island. Education Secretary Arne Duncan selected the winning states, after judges reviewed the 36 proposals submitted in the second round (from 35 states and the District of Columbia).
Duncan was scheduled to discuss why he picked the winning states in a conference call this afternoon. But some experts were already challenging the logic that led to this list of winners. Read the article in The New York Times online.
