A young but growing body of research yields solid evidence that TV shows and other digital resources that are carefully designed to reflect what’s known about effective reading instruction can significantly contribute to the literacy development of kids from poor families. Susan B. Neumann, a leading authority on early literacy, urges policymakers to consider all the resources necessary—including public television and its related electronic media—to distribute quality literacy resources to low-income families, and to show parents, teachers, and other caregivers how to use these resources effectively.
