This book is the outcome of research and teaching that we have been engaged in for many years, both separately and collaboratively. However, we mark 2008 as the pivotal year leading to the publication of the volume that you hold in your hands. In 2008, we secured a grant from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) to develop resources for teacher educators to use in their reading methods courses (Kucan Palincsar, 2008–2011). Specifically, we proposed to develop resources in the form of readings, activities, and video episodes to be used with preservice and inservice teachers who were learning about comprehension instruction. The resources would be designed to present discussion as the context for comprehension instruction.
