Coastal North Carolina Writing Conference

Hosted by the Watson College of Education Language and Literacy Program, the Professional Development System Partnership, and Uni-Spire, a new faculty led small business.

The Common Core State Standards require all teachers to teach writing effectively. Writing is a gateway to many 21st century jobs (National Commission on Writing, 2006) and entry into higher education. Yet, the 2011 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reports that only 27% of our 8th and 12th grade students scored proficient or above in writing.

The Coastal North Carolina Writing Conference will assist teachers in addressing their writing professional development needs and support teachers and community members interested in writing for publication. Three strands will be offered: (1) Writing Workshop, (2) Writing Process and (3) Teaching Strategies for Writing in the Common Core. There will be something to meet the needs of all PK-12th grade ELA and content areas teachers. Community members who are interested in learning more about writing for an audience, will also find a strand that meets their needs.
