Showcase of International Project Partnerships
The Santa Clara Reading Council, a local council in California, supplies writing tools and books in Spanish for students in Mulukuku, Nicaragua, through the Sisters of Notre Dame Schools.
With support from the Colorado Council (CCIRA), more than 22,000 books have been sent to sustain libraries and reading rooms in rural South Africa. CCIRA also supports Saturday schools where students can improve their skills for further education or work.
To support the Trinidad Literacy Connection, the Florida Reading Association collected materials and donations at its conference, which teachers from Trinidad and Tobago were sponsored to attend. Donations were also solicited from local businesses.
The Book$ and a Buck program of the Kansas Reading Association supports the Ethiopia Books for Children and Educational Foundation. Accompanying each donation of a gently used book is a dollar to defray shipping expenses.
In a cross-council initiative with cooperation from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the Canadian Organization for Development in Education (CODE), Project Love provides school supplies to students in Ethiopia, Malawi, and Tanzania. Materials are donated by teachers, students, and their parents, and shipped overseas through CODE and CIDAs network of international contacts.
