The Caribbean

IRA finds some of its strongest international support among the islands of the Caribbean region. Through councils and affiliates in the Bahamas, Bermuda, the British and U.S. Virgin Islands, Dominica, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago, Caribbean reading professionals have access to a broad network of support and resources.

Activities in the region are coordinated by our International Development in the Caribbean Committee, with support from IRA’s divisions of Council and Affiliate Services and International Development. For information about council and affiliate activities in the Caribbean, contact IRA headquarters.

If you are a council leader interested in working with a Caribbean reading association or literacy group, or an organizer of Caribbean literacy projects, please visit our International Project Partnerships area.

Past projects

bulletTrinidad and Tobago—Read to Me
The principal goal of this project was to encourage pregnant women to read to their children. Mothers from low-income single-parent homes who attended 20 prenatal clinics participated in read-aloud sessions and received packets including children’s books for reading at home with their own children.
