International Outreach

IRA’s worldwide network provides resources and support to literacy teachers and learners around the globe. Individuals interested in becoming involved in these efforts can volunteer as a technical adviser or trainer.

On regional, national, and local levels, activities are supported by coordinating committees, IRA-affiliated national organizations, and staff program officers. In addition, councils in IRA’s network seek international project partnerships. Find out about our activities in

We also offers numerous programs and resources that cross national and regional boundaries:

IRA is also pleased to offer discounted membership for those living in countries with developing economies, and open access to all online resources to those in the World Bank’s “low income” nations. Find out more about these and other international literacy efforts by contacting our Division of International Development.

On March 30, 2006, IRA and UNESCO signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the objective of assisting countries to strengthen literacy policies, programs, and training to ensure that children, youth, and adults can reach a mastery level of reading competence in accordance with the United Nations Literacy Decade. The focus of this agreement is mainly on countries in Africa, but it provides for the possibility of expansion into other regions.
