Literacy Coaching Clearinghouse opens online
A joint product of IRA and NCTE, the Literacy Coaching Clearinghouse provides access to research and best practice, enhancing the knowledge base coaches rely on as they work within schools and districts to create excellent reading instruction in all classrooms. Among the sites features are professional standards for literacy/instructional coaches, issue briefs, a library, and a blog. Watch for upcoming events in an ongoing, online forum series, available to all interested parties through a free log-on. Each forum will focus on one topic and will be hosted by a member of the Clearinghouses National Advisory Board.
African American Read-In Chain to help mark Black History Month
In the spirit of celebration of February as Black History Month, IRA has endorsed the 18th National African American Read-In Chain, sponsored by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English. State and/or local councils of IRA were invited to serve as hosts to create a chain of readers on Sunday, February 4, 2007, or Monday, February 5, 2007. The chain involved reading works authored by African American writers at community sites and in school buildings. Get details.
IRA supports National Geographic campaign to promote geographic literacy
As part of the International Reading Associations continuing mission to ensure that everyone can attain the highest level of literacy, the Association is pleased to join National Geographics just-launched My Wonderful World campaign to promote geographic literacy. The goal of the campaign is to improve the geographic literacy of young people ages 817 by motivating parents and educators to expand geographic offerings in school, at home, and in their communities. Hispanic American Read-In Chain
In the spirit of celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month in September, the International Reading Association sponsored the seventh National Hispanic American Read-In Chain. The Association asked all councils to join in serving as hosts to create a chain of readers between September 15 and 18, 2006. The chain involved reading works authored by Hispanic American writers at community sites or in school buildings on one of these days. IRA councils that participated should complete a brief report on their activities. Get details and report form.
