IRA has been a constituent member of NCATE, now CAEP, since 1980. As one of approximately thirty Specialized Professional Associations (SPAs), we have developed a strong and positive role within the CAEP coalition. CAEP has member organizations of teachers, teacher educators, content specialists, and local and state policy makers, all committed to advancing excellence in educator preparation with the ultimate goal of strengthening PreK–12 student learning. Together, these organizations represent more than 3 million individuals. The professional associations that comprise CAEP also provide financial support and participate in the development of standards, policies, and procedures.
Members of IRA's Professional Standards and Ethics project serve as advisors on the IRA-CAEP partnership and, with along other IRA literacy professionals, serve as program reviewers to strengthen reading specialist/literacy coach education programs nationwide.
