Job description:
Position: Full-time, tenure-track assistant professor, associate professor or professor. Rank to be determined by qualifications.

Start Date: September 2014

Responsibilities: Prepare and teach undergraduate and graduate literacy classes within the following areas of specialization: literacy assessment, methods of literacy instruction at the elementary and secondary levels including ESL; literacy coaching, reading/literacy specialist, literacy policy, and societal impact on literacy acquisition. Develop literacy curriculum, engage in and maintain scholarly activities, engage in service to the department, school, college, and broad professional community and provide academic advisement to students.

Job requirements:
Required Qualifications for Assistant Professor: Ph.D. or Ed.D. (ABD with definite completion date accompanied by a letter from dissertation chair confirming completion date) from an accredited institution in Literacy or related field; three years B-12 teaching experience in schools including the teaching of reading; demonstrated study and knowledge of the diverse field of literacy as confirmed by such data as advanced degrees, honors, awards, reputation in the subject field, and research or other activities to keep abreast of current developments in the literacy field; effectiveness in teaching as demonstrated by such data as judgment of colleagues, development of teaching materials or new courses, student reaction, student surveys, interviews and/or classroom observations; potential for scholarly activity; strong oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications for Assistant Professor: Commitment to a literacy education program; evidence of support for cultural diversity, e.g. experience with community outreach, working with diverse populations, partnerships, etc.; knowledge of literacy theories, foundations, and/or literacy instructional methods and how they impact schools; experience with college teaching, knowledge and/or experience of literacy policy; experience with technology as an instructional delivery system; experience with writing instruction; knowledge of and experience in teaching elementary or secondary literacy methods; evidence of effective interpersonal skills

Required Qualifications for Associate Professor/Professor: Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Literacy or related field from an accredited institution; three years teaching experience in K-12 schools; demonstrated record of excellence in college teaching; an established record of scholarship, teaching, and service; demonstrated experience with working with state and federal educational reforms and mandates; demonstrated knowledge of the diversity within the field of literacy; demonstrated knowledge of teacher education and teacher preparation at the undergraduate and graduate levels; ability to contribute to a positive work environment in the department and across the college; demonstrated experience with faculty governance, leadership, mentoring, and curriculum and program development; strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with colleagues as well as with public schools.

Preferred Qualifications for Associate Professor/ Professor: Evidence of on-going contributions and/or engagement to a literacy education program; evidence of participation in local/state/national literacy organizations; evidence of support for cultural diversity, e.g. experience with community outreach, working with diverse populations, partnerships, etc.

About the Department:
The Literacy Department at SUNY Cortland is in a state of transition. Within the next two to five years the department will experience a loss of faculty due to retirement. Consequently, the department is looking for faculty of all ranks for contributing to the new vision of the department. The Literacy Department at SUNY Cortland offers a masters program leading to reading specialist certification B-6, 5-12 or B-6 and 5-12 for candidates who possess initial teaching certification. Currently, the enrollment for the program is 120 graduate teacher candidates. In addition to its graduate program, the department provides required service courses to undergraduate teacher education programs at the College.

The College traces its beginnings to 1868 and offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs in the School of Education, School of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Professional Studies.
