Jerry Johns has taught students from kindergarten through graduate school. He was a classroom teacher and special reading teacher. He also served as a visiting professor at the University of Victoria in British Columbia and Western Washington University. A distinguished teaching professor emeritus at Northern Illinois University, Dr. Johns has authored, edited, or co-authored over 350 books, chapters, research studies, student materials, and journal articles. (all published by Kendall Hunt). His more than 700 presentations for schools and professional organizations involved travel throughout a majority of the states and thirteen countries. Dr. Johns served as president of the International Reading Association, the Illinois Reading Council, the Northern Illinois Reading Council, and the Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers. Currently, he consults with schools, conducts workshops with teachers, speaks at local, state, and international conferences, and works on various writing projects. He also enjoys playing pinball, fine dining, driving his sports car, traveling, and visiting his family in Washington and Michigan.
