In Chapter 1, the authors discuss recent changes in the role of the literacy coach, as well as recommendations for that role. This chapter also identifies the qualities that make coaches effective and provides examples of effective teaching principles (i.e., planning, managing, delivering, and evaluating classroom instruction) with relevance for coaching in early and elementary literacy classrooms.
