Guided Comprehension for English Learners
Abstract of
Chapter 4
Guided Comprehension for English Learners
Maureen McLaughlin
Guided Comprehension centers, which are situated in Stage Three of the Guided Comprehension Model for English Learners, are the focus of this chapter. The centers are designed to encourage English learners to practice comprehension skills and strategies while developing language skills. Students often work with partners while engaging in the center tasks, which are designed to be both meaningful and open-ended. Topics of the centers range from fluency and sentences to poetry and making books. Each has been infused with supports for English learners. These include (1) ensuring that books written in native languages, as well as other culturally relevant titles, are available in the centers, (2) integrating multiple modes of representing thinking, (3) inviting students to work with other ELs of the same culture when reading texts in their native language, and (4) encouraging ELs to partner with native English speakers when working in centers focused on language development, such as fluency and vocabulary.
