In today's world of full-day kindergarten, there is space in the curriculum for a balance of whole-class, small-group, and individual instruction. This chapter explores small-group reading instruction, or guided reading, in kindergarten. Although the idea of guided reading in kindergarten is controversial and the research on it sparse, the author explains why guided reading has a place in the kindergarten classroom. She also shows teachers how they can use guided reading to help kindergartners develop the skills and strategies they need to become successful readers—as long as they accept that guided reading doesn't look the same for emergent readers as it does for readers at other stages of literacy development. The chapter offers ideas and strategies for organization and management, assessment and grouping, and matching texts and readers. It also provides the nuts and bolts of a guided reading lesson from start to finish.
