This chapter examines the substantial amount of research on Sustained Silent Reading (SSR). SSR has been recommended in the literature under different names since the l960s. Many studies with mixed results are reviewed in the chapter. Although many of the studies completed around the world have generally been positive, there are conditions associated with those that report an increase in reading achievement, as discussed in the chapter.
