In this chapter, authors Michelle J. Kelley and Nicki Clausen-Grace describe why and how they remodeled independent reading to be more purposeful and connected to direct instruction based on student needs. The structure of R5 (Read, Relax, Reflect, Respond, and Rap) is described in detail. Key concepts addressed include focusing on motivation and interest, building in monitoring and accountability, integrating response and social interaction, establishing a supportive classroom environment, and scaffolding book selection. In addition, an at-home program, R4 (Read, Relax, Reflect, and Respond), mirroring the in-school program, is described, including connections back to the classroom and feedback from parents.
