What does proficient reading and writing look like for young children as they progress through the early years of school? Here, Lauren Resnick and Sally Hampton describe Reading and Writing Grade by Grade's explicit approach to and copious examples of the knowledge and skills children should have between ages 5 and 9. The authors acknowledge the reality of accountability measures and high-stakes testing while emphasizing the need for a formative approach to standards-setting to guide teaching and learning.
