The first stage of the Guided Comprehension Model, teacher-directed whole-group instruction, establishes a classroom community of learners, enables students to access multiple levels of authentic texts, and provides explicit instruction in comprehension strategies. The authors outline the components of this stage and offer detailed descriptions of explicit instruction and comprehension routines including Literature Circles, Reciprocal Teaching, and Questioning the Author.
