Nancy Padak, Evangeline Newton, Timothy Rasinski, and Rick M. Newton address the traditional and important topic of word study and etymology in their chapter Getting to the Root of Word Study: Teaching Latin and Greek Word Roots in Elementary and Middle Grades. Here they take into account that more than half of all words in the English language have their origins in Latin or Greek roots, and they provide an approach based on the meanings of these roots by which students can learn words of high semantic utility and strategies that expand their awareness and understanding of how these words function in the English language. Concrete suggestions and alternatives for instruction are provided.
