This chapter discusses current theory and research on vocabulary teaching and identifies challenges many teachers of struggling adolescents face in providing best-practice vocabulary instruction. It provides other options to the prevalent “assign, define, and test” procedure often used by uninformed teachers. The chapter offers sound instructional guidelines for teaching academic vocabulary and several classroom tested strategies. These best-practice strategies involve students actively in semantically focused, multi-dimensional, and socially interactive encounters with words.
