Adolescent Literacy, Field Tested
Abstract of
Chapter 14
English-Language Learners in the Secondary Classroom
Carol Rothenberg
This chapter highlights the unique considerations in developing literacy with students who are learning the English language at the same time as they are learning in English—English language learners (ELL). The author describes the diverse factors that influence the literacy development of ELL students and how that translates into the secondary school classroom. She discusses what teachers need to know about language and provides practical suggestions for classroom application. The heart of the chapter then focuses on best practices as defined in recent research, and offers a variety of ideas for integrating language and literacy development across the content areas.
