Adolescents who have tumultuous lives are often “struggling to survive” or STS students who need a different kind of curriculum. By offering these teenagers young adult (YA) books with heroic protagonists who address difficult issues, teachers can promote resiliency as well as increase students' literacy skills. Reading strategies, YA titles, and YA resources are listed to assist teachers who have these students in their classes.
