Bringing grammar into the writing process is a familiar idea, but most often that connection is only made in the final stages of writing: during editing. In this chapter, author Deborah Dean expands that connection, showing ways to connect grammar and writing in composing as well as in editing. Dean begins by providing a snapshot of a class using grammar to strengthen students' ideas about language in writing, and then she follows the snapshot by sharing teaching suggestions to show how grammar can influence the generation of ideas, how sentence construction can develop thinking, and how punctuation can influence meaning.
