Lori Jamison Rog
For many writers, getting those initial thoughts on paper is the hardest part of the writing process. Chapter 2 of Marvelous Minilessons for Teaching Beginning Writing, K–3 provides a collection of minilessons for helping young writers gather and organize ideas for writing. Some of the lessons include the following: How to Write in Kindergarten offers a model for getting our youngest students off to the “write” start. Tuck a Topic in Your Pocket and Writing Ideas Bingo help young writers generate writing topics. “I Can Write a Book” and Sticky Dot Details encourage writers to elaborate on a topic. Five-Finger Planner, Storm and Sort, and 3-2-1 Planner provide tools for organizing ideas before writing. This chapter provides teachers with a menu of choices for helping students with that important first step of getting started with writing.
