Instruction for shared, guided, and independent writing are discussed in this chapter. Each is presented separately, but the three are also explored as intertwined and interdependent. The author stresses that the ultimate goal is for students to use what they have learned in shared and guided writing and then to choose to write, taking the responsibility of the writing process and thereby becoming independent writers. The chapter offers suggestions for books to use in writing activities—including pattern books, alphabet books, and nonfiction—as well as an annotated list of book titles organized by genre.
