full text - PDF

This chapter covers how to build students' habits of inference and prediction, which involve the processes of combining the current text information with one's own experience in order to create meaning that is not directly stated in the text. The chapter covers types of inferences—text to text, text to self, and text to world—and the importance of teacher modeling. The bulk of the chapter consists of numerous activities like Prediction Basketball and Dialogue Comic Strip to help build students' skills. A chart within each chapter shows the usefulness for each activity with different content areas.
