Literacy + Math = Creative Connections in the Elementary Classroom
Abstract of
Chapter 6
Viewing and Visually Representing Mathematical Information
Jennifer L. Altieri
This chapter focuses on connecting mathematics with the ability to view and understand a variety of media beyond the printed word, and the ability to visual represent concepts and ideas in various formats, two skills that are essential to being considered literate in today's world. The chapter begins with a brief discussion detailing why these aspects of literacy are important. The rest of the chapter helps the reader to apply the ideas so that not only are literacy skills being enhanced but mathematical knowledge is being strengthened. Specific suggestions for reinforcing content-specific word knowledge as well as broader mathematical ideas and concepts are shared. Finally, creative activities linking dramatic representation and mathematics are provided.
