full text - PDF

This chapter offers vocabulary strategies and techniques that enhance students' understanding of new words and concepts. Each technique identifies corresponding developmental reading levels and multiple intelligences. Also included in the second edition are additional ways to motivate and engage students. The added “Motivated/Engagement” sections are meant to help teachers differentiate their instruction when trying to reach the whole child. Strategy assessments are embedded within each strategy for educators to evaluate students' strengths and weaknesses within a particular strategy. Appropriate teacher talk (e.g., statements, questions, and prompts) is provided at the beginning of each of the strategy sections and within each technique; using such teacher talk encourages readers to think strategically as they employ the given skills.
