full text - PDF

This chapter provides a description of successful professional development programs that allow teachers to build on the knowledge and skills of literacy to which they were exposed in preservice education courses. In addition, the issues surrounding the development of these programs are discussed. The trend in professional development is to present workshops that deepen teachers' understandings of how students learn as well as demonstrations of how these understandings can lead to increased learning on the part of their students. The chapter details examples of specific programs that enhance teachers' pedagogical and content knowledge through participation in relevant experiences from which they can develop understandings to enrich student learning.
